Students are referred to our school from Nassau and Suffolk Counties and New York City when their educational goals are not being met in their local school district. The program provides educational and therapeutic services to children between the ages of five and twenty-one, who are classified as autistic, mentally retarded and/or multiply disabled. Our school is approved by the New York State Education Department. Our goal is to provide quality educational programming in order to increase every student’s level of independence so he or she is able to participate more effectively in the community. Educational Program
Classroom instructional goals are in the following curriculum areas: Activities of Daily Living, Reading, Math, Science, Social Studies, Social Skills and Vocational Education. All students receive Art and Music Therapy, Adaptive Physical Education, and Computer Education as well as related services mandated on the student's Individual Educational Plan (Speech/ Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Counseling, Skilled Nursing Services). Additional Supports include Psychological, Psychiatric and Family Services.
Clinical Services
The Children's Day Program uses a collaborative model for providing educational services. Related services, including Speech/Language Therapy and Occupational and Physical Therapy are now provided in the classroom setting when appropriate. By offering these services in natural contexts we provide students with more opportunities to acquire, develop, and exercise their skills into meaningful daily life activities. Additional supports for those students who present greater behavioral and emotional challenges are provided by psychology and social work. The result is better integration of clinical and educational services.
